When most people think of Black history, countries like the United States, Ghana, or South Africa often come to mind. Japan, however, rarely enters the conversation.
But more than 400 years ago, an African man named Yasuke changed history in one of the most unexpected places in the world.
His story reminds us of something we believe deeply at Black Joy Global Travel:

Who Was Yasuke?
Very little is known about Yasuke's early life, but historians believe he was born somewhere in East Africa, likely in present-day Mozambique or the surrounding region.
In the late 1500s, he arrived in Japan alongside Jesuit missionaries. Because most Japanese people had never seen an African before, Yasuke immediately drew attention wherever he went.
One person, however, saw much more than his appearance.
That man was Oda Nobunaga (OH-dah NOH-boo-NAH-gah), one of Japan's most powerful military leaders.
Rather than treating Yasuke as a curiosity, Nobunaga recognized his intelligence, strength, and character.
Over time, Yasuke earned Nobunaga's trust and became one of the very few foreigners ever granted the title of samurai.
Why His Story Matters
Yasuke's story challenges the way many of us were taught history.
Too often, Black history is presented as something confined to a handful of countries.
The truth is much bigger.
Black explorers, soldiers, scholars, merchants, and leaders have influenced civilizations across every inhabited continent.
Japan is just one example.
The more we learn, the more we realize that our global story has always been far richer than many history books suggested.
